Savage Rapids Dam and lower fish ladder.
| | Savage Rapids Dam is a 39 foot high, 500 foot long diversion dam that spans the mainstem of Oregon's Rogue River. The dam's fish ladders and screens do not meet current standards, and at times the dam completely blocks upstream fish passage. The dam negatively impacts adult spring Chinook salmon, which spawn exclusively upstream of the dam, and impedes passage for four other runs of salmon and steelhead. RDG is assisting Slayden Construction, Inc. with value engineering and design of temporary fish passage solutions to be implemented during dam removal. The value engineering change proposal was for the Savage Rapids pumping plant water intake manifold. The modification replaced steel pipe with less expensive HDPE pipe to reduce cost and construction effort, while maintaining design flows. RDG is also designing a retrofit for an existing fish ladder to be activated during dam removal to ensure fish passage through the project area. Dam removal will be completed in 2009.
