| | In the summer of 2005, River Design Group partnered Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks designed and implemented a fish habitat restoration project in Hallowat Creek, a tributary to the North Fork of the Flathead River. The purpose of this project was to benefit threatened and endangered aquatic species, namely fluvial bulltrout, salvelinus confluentus. Removal or destabilization of large woody debris structures, during fire suppression efforts of the 2001 Moose Creek Fire lead to reduced habitat complexity in the form of pool forming structures, natural gradient control and spawning gravels. As a result, low bulltrout redd counts have been noted in recent surveys. Hallowat Creek remains essentially a wilderness system and minimal road encroachment occurs only at the mouth. The challenge was to implement the restoration design while minimizing disturbance to stream banks, riparian areas and adjacent hillslopes. Major project components include: - Initial site review and survey of existing conditions
- Prescription of habitat enhancement structures
- Procurement of post-fire timber
- Construction plan, implementation, and oversight
- Monitoring
