Brown Spring Creek terrace prior to project construction.
| | The Brown Spring Creek reconstruction project was implemented to restore fish passage on a spring creek tributary to the Sycan River in the Upper Klamath Basin. Earthen berms and vertical standpipes constructed in the 1960s eliminated fish access to a spring network. The springs are believed to have been historically used by two endemic federally listed endangered fish species, the Lost River sucker (Deltistes luxatus) and the shortnose sucker (Chasmistes brevirostris), and the state sensitive Klamath redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss newberrii) for spawning. A roughened channel fish passage design was implemented in 2005. The design channel was comprised of five steps with intermediate riffles to dissipate the 6 ft of gradient from the upstream pool to lower Brown Spring Creek. Post-project sampling completed by USFWS has documented fish passage through the project area. An expired adult redband trout in spawning colors was found upstream of the roughened channel reach in 2006.
